The founder of Chaplain has been a chaplain with two colleges and a university in Lancashire, United Kingdom and a Chaplain at a UK police/constabulary force for over 10 years. During this time the most meaningful and productive pastoral care and welfare sessions have been over food. With the location of many police stations and headquarters in remote location, the availability of good quality, affordable food was usually poor. Hence, we found a lot of food consumed by the people he interacted with had little nutritional benefit.
The concept of professional policing was taken up by Robert Peel when he became Home Secretary in 1822. Peel’s Metropolitan Police Act 1829 established a full-time, professional and centrally-organised police force for the Greater London area, known as the Metropolitan Police.
Nine principles were set out in the “General Instructions” issued to every new police officer in the Metropolitan Police from 1829. This is commonly known as policing by consent. One of these principles is “to recognise always that the power of the police to fulfil their functions and duties is dependent on public approval of their existence, actions and behaviour, and on their ability to secure and maintain public respect”.
As a Chaplain this principle was imperative for the delivery of a successful chaplaincy service. This very principle was used to create The Chaplain; a catering trailer situated in Kidlington. The Chaplain aim to provide good quality food to the community we serve such that we satisfy the dietary needs of our community in such a way that The Chaplain is respected as the go-to place for good quality, affordable food.
